I was never sure of my love language. The only thing I knew for sure was that my love language was NOT acts of service. Then my husband and I were in a small group where we were reading the book The 5 Love Languages together. Each week we’d study a different language. Each night we had a different activity to do as a couple. This particular night the hosts asked us to go on a walk in the neighborhood and share with each other 3 things our spouse could do that would say “I love you” whether or not it’s our language. As we talked, I realized that when I wake up and my husband has emptied the dishwasher for me before he left for work, I always feel like he left a note saying “I love you and I’m thinking about you.” Wow! Here it is! My love language is Acts of Service! (and yes, my hubby still tries to empty that dishwasher every morning for me! — apologizes when he doesn’t have time! — I feel loved!)

Dear Dr. Chapman, I just read The Five Love Languages. I was married for 45 years but my husband died about 2 years ago. I couldn’t see what good it would do me, but the book club had suggested it. So I read it! Praise the Lord. The book was easy reading, and easy understanding. And. you know what I found out?
I found out, after 45years of marriage, that my husband DID love me. We just spoke different languages. Had I read this 5 years ago or any time while my husband lived, he and I would have had a great marriage. Don’t get me wrong. We had a good 45 year marriage but it could have been fantastic!!

My husband Mike and I started out our dating process by going through the “Love Dare” together. For 40 days we talked about things that most couples probably would not have normally talked about until they were married. Seeing that both my husband and myself had been married before, it was good to hear where we felt we failed and let the other person down. After finishing that book, we moved to several others and stumbled upon the Daily Devotional of The 5 Love Languages—which my husband surprised me with the night of our honeymoon! I love going through this book with him and learning so much and how important it is for him to hear words of affirmation from me. He knows how much I value gifts from him, and we both strive daily to do things for each other. He has since the beginning of our relationship made Wednesdays “Happy Wednesdays!” and surprises me with a gift, sometimes cookies, chocolates, or flowers! He is so good to me. I love him because I choose to!

We met at college and started learning about our love languages by reading books like “Letters to Karen” by Charlie Shedd. We have been married for 35 years and have had a wonderful relationship built on strong communication. We are still learning to speak one another’s love language through all the stages of life.

Thanks for writing this book, and especially for putting alot of the knowledge it contains on your site for free. My church (in Milton, Ontario) has begun a series that focusses on the Five Love Languages. It’s been really helpful, and my Wife and I have done the online test. I have the results of her test in a place where I am reminded often of ways to love her that she appreciates. I wonder if this language thing is God’s way of stopping us from building our own tower of Babel, and to show us that we need His love and His wisdom, not only for salvation, but also to be able to reach our highest goal – to love one another. Love is such a loaded word and our culture really does a good job of messing up the meaning so we can’t get it right. This book has helped bring the Holy Spirit’s tongue of fire that has allowed me to learn how to love my Wife in her language. It works with other people I know too. God is definitely using this. Thankful to Him!!!!!! Keep up the good work and thanks!!
